Τον Γιώργο Παπαγιάννη στον Παναθηναϊκό καλωσόρισε ο Θανάσης Γιαννακόπουλος, ο οποίος έδειξε απόλυτα ικανοποιημένος από το γεγονός ότι το «τριφύλλι» τόνωσε το ελληνικό του στοιχείο. 

«Ήθελα πολύ να επιστρέψει ο Παπαγιάννης γιατί πιστεύω και εγώ πως με τον ελληνικό κορμό που φτιάχνει ο Δημήτρης, θα έχουμε τις ανάλογες επιτυχίες με αυτές που είχαμε όταν η Εθνική Ομάδα ήταν βασισμένη στους Έλληνες του Παναθηναϊκού», σχολίασε ο παράγοντας των πρωταθλητών Ελλάδος.
